THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE

“do we teach language using culture or do we teach culture using language”. 

Culture and language have had many definitions for various decades since the twenty century but each author has his/her point of view, some of them have divided culture in different categories according to their own perception; according to the language term they said that the language is connected to the culture or vice versa. Culture and language both are important in everywhere because they have their own roots where the place is located, there isn’t culture without language or language without culture, their individuals construct the culture when they are interacting with the language, but in the classroom when learners are learning a foreign language they have to connect with that culture if not it doesn’t make sense.

It is important when learners are learning a foreign language that the students have to learn the culture where the language is spoken, for that teacher has to implement the goals for getting the best outcomes in teaching and learning every teacher has his point of view and implement the goals that are required; in this era that everybody think on the globalization is important for learners to know as much as he can for the other cultures in order or interact with foreign people or connect the country to the other markets, for that reason is important to learn a language not only using in the actual context in not thinking on the culture of the foreign language.

According to the definition of culture it has had many definitions and it is possible that other authors give another definition in the future, but the conclusión is that culture is constructed by the language because language let the individuals to comunícate in different forms may be using symbols, gestures or words, and the interaction allows to improve their culture such as some authors divide in politician, economic, social, values, believes, because with the language the communication touch other fields such as food, literature, folklore, music, art, aircraft, music, habits, religión, and so on. Language always had been important since at the beginning of the humankind, and there are many languages around the world that people can learn in order to know new cultures not only the languages of the developed countries, for that there are many communities that they are unknown because the governments don’t give the importance of the Little communities.

 

It is important the government to give the opportunity that students can choose their foreign language because it gives them the opportunity to know new cultures although it is difficult  because our country has implemented English as a foreign language. It is suitable that students in Colombia who are receiving English classes in the classroom, the classes included the culture not only The United States if not the countries where The English language is spoken. There are more than one hundred countries that their native language is English but many people around the world don’t know anything about them, but it is time to give the opportunity to the learners to know new cultures through the language or the language through the culture.

However culture have many definitions and nobody I agree with any author there are no problems, but we have to know culture depends on language because with language the culture can be better every day and the culture increase every day, in the classrooms are a time to teach foreign languages integrating their cultures in order students know new things and unknown things, events, customs, music, literature and religión for them. It important for education to give the opportunities that students can choose their own foreign language not to impose a foreign language because the government wants to.

There is a relationship between language and culture, they can't be separate. when a teacher is teaching to the learners it is important to include culture with the language or language to the culture. when learners are learning a foreign language the culture where the foreign language has to be included in the classrooms are a time to teach foreign languages integrating their cultures in order students know new things and unknown things, events, customs, music, literature, and religión for them; although there are many definitions of culture nobody agrees with any author.
